The United States Political Strategy in the Balkans
The US political strategy is focused on its main geopolitical objective in the Balkans, which is to ensure democratization of all countries and successful integration into the European Union and NATO. Therefore, its political focus is primarily put on countries which have either not joined the EU or NATO, or both. The US administration supports activities in the region which enhance the rule of law, democratization, free markets and freedom of the press.

The United States of America hopes the Balkan States will become net contributors to peace and prosperity in the transatlantic community in the future. The United States has aspired to democratize all countries in the region allowing them to enter the European Union and NATO, thus completing their transition towards the western liberal economic and social model. Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia have fully undergone such a transition, the Western Balkan countries have partially been integrated through NATO (Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia), and Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have remained fully outside of the objective laid out at the beginning of democratic changes some thirty years ago.
