Abstract

Dr. Wolfgang Trunk (PhD) (Team Leader in unit “From Waste to Resources” – EC DG Environment, European Commission) – “The Circular Economy in the EU”

The transition towards a circular economy in the EU has made significant progress over the past years by delivering numerous legislative and non-legislative initiatives. These initiatives will unfold their potential once fully implemented on the ground. Pursuing the circular economy agenda will remain a key policy priority for the European Commission during the next mandate. The presentation will also discuss the role of selected waste management operations, including recycling and energy recovery, in the transition towards a circular economy.

Dr. Gesine Lorenz (Hydroisotop) –Determination of biogenic carbon content of industrial CO2 emissions”

Part of the EU regulation of industrial emissions is the assessment of the renewable share of CO2 emitted from combustion processes. The quantification of this biogenic carbon share of the emitted CO2 is carried out using various methods. Among other things, both the combustion material and the flue gas can be analysed analytically for the biogenic carbon content. The most important method here is the radiocarbon method.

Who do we bring together?

  • We bring together all key strategy actors (ministers, public officials, municipalities, industry associations, waste collection, recycling/ treatment companies, in Europe with an initial focus on Southeastern Europe and Eastern Europe.

How do we bring together?

  • Through closed groups on the online crowd knowledge platform – weTHINK.eu.
  • Through bi-monthly online working group meetings and two bi-annual online conferences.

Why do we bring them together?

  • To regularly exchange, technical operational and strategic know how and best practices on waste and waste management.
  • To conduct training for service companies and municipalities on water and waste  management.
  • To develop strategy recommendations and position papers to improve  the legal, political and economic environment for successful waste circularity.
  • To develop projects on waste circularity and to implement them.
  • To improve waste circularity in Europe.
