As set in the new EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan, there is only one planet Earth, yet by 2050, the world will be consuming as if there were three. Global consumption of materials such as biomass, fossil fuels, metals and minerals is expected to double in the next forty years, while annual waste generation is projected to increase by 70 % by 2050. In line with the European Green Deal, a concerted strategy for a climate-neutral, resource-efficient and competitive economy was launched. Scaling up the circular economy from front-runners to the mainstream economic players will make a decisive contribution to achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and decoupling economic growth from resource use.
To fulfil this ambition, the transition towards a regenerative growth model that gives back to the planet more than it takes, advance towards keeping its resource consumption within planetary boundaries, and therefore strive to reduce its consumption footprint and double its circular material use rate in the coming decade must be accelerated. Building on the potential of digital technologies, the circular economy can strengthen the industrial base of the region, and foster business creation and entrepreneurship among SMEs.

Opportunities
- a cross-boarder peer-learning experience through which the already established good practices are not already presented, but also represented by the people implementing it in the following informal discussions;
- regional community and network building in order to establish cooperation on different levels; also for the later forming of potential consortiums and responding to the new realities together, by applying to the European Green Deal related funding within the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027;
- bridging the divide between tech-companies with developed solutions and potentially interested companies running the operational aspects of respective sectors (energy, waste-management and plastics);
- forecasting potential future tech-solutions by discussing the remaining challenges and obstacles in the communities built.
